After making his debut on 25 July out of the bullpen, the left-hander went 3.2 innings in the St Louis Cardinals win against the Chicago Cubs

Kim Kwanghyun, the left-handed pitcher who was at the top of Korea's rotation in the WBSC Premier12 2019, started his first game in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Kim, who signed a two-year and US$ 8 million contract with the St Louis Cardinals after enjoying 17 wins for the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) SK Wyverns in the 2019 season, left with a no-decision in the game against the Chicago Cubs. He pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three hits, including the solo home run by right fielder Ian Happ that scored the only run against him, and three walks, while striking out one.

"I felt a little nervous," said Kim through an interpreter at the end of the game. "It's been a while since I pitched."

Three more pitchers took the mound for the Cardinals and combined for a 3-1 win.

Kim, who turned 32 on 22 July, had made his MLB debut on Saturday, 25 July, out of the bullpen. He entered the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth and earned the save.

Kim Kwanghyun started two games for Korea at the WBSC Premier12 2019. He finished with a 1-1 record and a 2.89 Earned Run Average. He went six innings allowing only one hit in a 3-1 win against Canada in the opening round. He pitched only 3.1 innings in a 7-0 loss against Chinese Taipei in the Super Round.

Kim was on the Korean roster that won a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics and on the roster that won the first WBSC Premier12 in 2015.
