The second baseman who helped Mexico qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics batted .375 with two homers in the first week of the LMP season.

Esteban Quiroz, second baseman for the Mexican National Baseball Team at the WBSC Premier12 2019, was named Mexican Pacific League (LMP) Player of the Week.

In the first week of the LMP season, the Cañeros de Los Mochis second baseman batted .375 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and nine runs batted in, to earn the opening week honour.

He started seven games for Mexico at last November's Premier12, including the bronze medal game against the United States, which Mexico won to claim their first-ever spot in baseball at the Olympics.

In the opening round, he belted a grand slam to help push Mexico past the Dominican Republic, for which he was named player of the game.

Government shuts out fans in Sonora

The State of Sonora has revoked permission for LMP clubs in the state to have fans at the stadium.

Posts on social media captured fans at the stadium not observing COVID-19 safety guidelines during the opening game between Yaquis de Obregón and Aguilas de Mexicali. An official release by the Government of Sonora announced that the authorization to allow fans during games has been cancelled.

"[The behavior in question at the stadium] represents a risk of an increased spread of COVID-19 for Sonorans," reads the release.

Fans won't be allowed to enter also at the games of the other two teams based in the State, Mayos de Navojoa and Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

The only states that now allow fans are Sinaloa (the defending champions Tomateros de Culiacán, Algodoneros de Guasave, Venados de Mazatlán and Cañeros de los Mochis) and Baja California (Águilas de Mexicali). This means that only 5 out of 10 teams in the league can have spectators at their games.

Despite the opening day incident, the Yaquis lead the standings with a perfect record.
