Former MLB player Juan Castro named manager of Mexico’s Premier12 team

MEXICO CITY — Former Major League Baseball player Juan Castro has been appointed the manager of the Mexican National Team that will compete in this November’s WBSC Premier12, the top international baseball event of the year and Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifier.

Mexico, the world’s current No. 6, will compete in Group A in Guadalajara, Mexico, along with No. 2 USA, No. 8 Netherlands and No. 12 Dominican Republic. The top two from the group will advance to the Super Round, 11-16 November, in Japan.

Castro will look to improve upon Mexico’s fourth-place finish in the 2015 WBSC Premier12 and secure a place in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by finishing as the top team from the Americas. In the 2015 Premier12, second-place USA was the top finisher out of the Americas.

“We are going to try to arm the team with the best players available,” Castro told reporters in the Mexican capital.

Castro plans to unite the roster for training and exhibition games two weeks ahead of the Premier12, which will be the longest training camp in the history of the Mexican National Team.

Castro played for Mexico in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and served as a coach in the 2013 edition.

He has experience managing teams in the Mexican Pacific League (LMP) and Mexican Baseball League (LMB).
